5 Gbps Ethernet Slip Rings

5 Gbps Ethernet Slip Rings

UEA has developed a slip ring capable of carrying 5 Gbps Ethernet data through continuous rotation. This keeps data moving without twisted cables or limits on how far the equipment can turn.

This is not one standard, off-the-shelf slip ring. It is a proven capability that can be built into different UEA slip ring designs based on the size, circuits, speed, environment, and mounting requirements of your application.

Benefits of 5 Gbps Slip Rings

  • Transfers large amounts of data through a rotating connection at speeds up to 5 Gbps
  • Helps prevent the slip ring from becoming a bottleneck for cameras, LiDAR, radar, and other high-data systems
  • Can combine Ethernet with power, signals, encoders, coaxial, or fiber-optic circuits in one assembly
  • Reduces electrical noise, dropped packets, and communication interruptions during rotation
  • Can be built into capsule, through-bore, and custom slip ring designs
  • Supports future equipment upgrades that require more bandwidth
  • Can be configured around the size, speed, environment, and circuit needs of the application
5 Gbps Ethernet Slip Rings

Modern cameras, sensors, LiDAR systems, radar equipment, and automated machines generate large amounts of data. UEA’s 5 Gbps capability provides a faster way to transfer data through a rotating joint while maintaining continuous 360-degree rotation.

The 5 Gbps Ethernet connection can be included in capsule, through-bore, and custom slip ring designs. Ethernet circuits can also be combined with power, standard signals, encoder circuits, coaxial connections, and fiber optics in one assembly.

Reliable 5 Gbps communication through rotation requires careful control of the entire signal path. UEA uses controlled impedance, grounding, shielding, precious-metal contacts, and optimized contact geometry to help reduce electrical noise, dropped packets, and communication interruptions. The mechanical design also helps limit vibration-related performance issues.

Common Applications

UEA’s 5 Gigabit Ethernet slip ring capability can support applications such as:

  • Robotics and industrial automation
  • Autonomous vehicles and marine systems
  • Machine vision and surveillance equipment
  • Radar and defense systems
  • Medical imaging equipment
