Clearing and maintaining utility right-of-ways can be no easy feat, especially in remote or heavily wooden areas. Since 1979, Jarraff Industries has provided specialized right-of-way maintenance, land clearing, and tree care equipment, making this task much easier for utility companies and public works departments.
Jarraff strives to be a leader in the right-of-way maintenance and land clearing equipment industry. Jarraff’s equipment line-up includes the Jarraff All-Terrain Tree Trimmer, with a 360-degree range of motion and a 75-foot cutting height.
Jarraff consistently looks for ways to innovate and improve its products and turned to UEA for an enhanced rotary union that could meet their current requirements and take them into the future. UEA dove into the project, quickly developing rotary unions for the Jarraff All-Terrain Tree Trimmer to allow hydraulic fluid to pass between the stationary base to the rotating cab and cutting boom. The UEA engineering team utilized Jarraff’s field experience and failures to design a rotary union that could withstand the environmental and working requirements.
“The engineering staff is willing to suggest ideas to improve a current design or think outside the box to develop something new that has not been done before,” said Mark Walser, Jarraff Industries engineer manager.
Jarraff and UEA worked as design partners, helping Jarraff make important design decisions by providing CAD models of different design possibilities to allow them to vet out ideas and concepts.
“I tried to help Jarraff by imagining being in their shoes. I would throw out ideas to help spur a larger discussion on product performance,” said Brady Haugo, UEA hydraulic engineering supervisor.
With past performance data, UEA engineers were able to reinforce some of the rotary union’s circuit seals while sliming down other circuit seals to aid in better low pressure and low-temperature sealing. UEA has been successful with Jarraff in large part due to UEA’s strong partnership with our seal suppliers, allowing UEA to design and source high-quality parts.
In addition to the UEA engineering team, the UEA sales and customer service teams often went above and beyond to ensure Jarraff had the rotary unions when needed and provided frequent updates on lead times for future orders.
“Sales and customer service continue to improve the lines of communication to ensure we have the product on order to meet our needs,” said Walser.
“Working with UEA, we were able to solve an issue that was creating quality and warranty concerns. The UEA and Jarraff engineering teams collaborated on a design that was used to solve the concerns. The design was a success and is still being used today,” said Walser.
